The ADLD community has accumulated wisdom over time on how to navigate daily activities and find comfort while living with the disease. Here are some of their top tips:
– Stand up slowly – This is key for those with autonomic dysfunction who may feel lightheaded. Take your time and be cautious when moving from sitting to standing.
– Stretch daily – Stretching helps prevent muscle spasms and weakness. Make it part of your daily routine.
– Use a shower chair – Falls are a serious risk. Shower chairs allow you to wash while seated safely. Don’t be afraid to ask for help transferring in and out.
– Try a waffle-cushion or ROHO Mosaic – These cushions prevent bed sores and make seating more comfortable. Use them anywhere you sit frequently.
– Consider an alternating air pressure mattress – For under $70, these mattress pads prevent bed sores and improve comfort. Adjust the pressure dial based on body weight.
– Invest in an adjustable mattress – Allows you to recline and sit upright in bed, helpful for eating, drinking and varying positions.
– Explore low/no alcohol drinks – Alcohol can exacerbate symptoms, but products like Ariel alcohol-free wine let you participate in drinking occasions.
– Use PVA towels – Keep these cooling towels in the fridge and use as needed to regain energy and lower body temperature.
